“I’m trying to draw sculpture,” says David Moreno. Of course, if we think of the paths that the artist builds through his artworks, we can say that we see in them a kind of abstract lines and contours, almost physically undefined, that lead the spirit to the deepest spheres of existence.
Moreno’s sculptures can be viewed as a form of sketch that represents an imaginary architecture, existing somewhere between a 3D model and a crafted object, as well as between concept and realization. This gives the impression that his works are suspended, floating without any visible support or mediation. It is an imaginative exercise that David invites the viewer to engage with, serving as a test of our perception of the surrounding world.
The Barcelona-based artist works with wood, plastic, steel – and piano strings – to create structures that look like the doodles of an architect, only in three dimensions. The overlapping materials are welded together, capturing the essence of their freehand pencil origins. The resulting pieces appear only partially formed, which is why they feel so weightless. Fragile, floating houses and staircases lead to mysterious doorways, connecting unknown lands. For Moreno, these connections symbolize human relationships: he views human energy as a network of interconnected lines.
David Moreno was born in Barcelona in 1978. An architect by training, he soon devoted himself to his artistic practice. Since 2006, he has exhibited in galleries and museums worldwide. He now lives and works between Rotterdam and Barcelona.
