A profound journey of self-discovery and healing, “The Gospel of Getting Free” is Lara Taubman‘s new album, released on June 21st. Taubman combines influences such as Leonard Cohen and Patti Smith into a rich tapestry of sounds influenced by Americana and gospel-inspired folk.
While this album continues the melancholy, heartbroken themes of the first two albums, she suddenly felt compelled to write songs about joy and hope for the first time.
A hallmark of Americana is the ability to blend diverse genres, and the world of jazz, folk, and contemporary singer-songwriter comes together in a unique style centered around rhythm. In this album, she embraces emotional freedom and joy in a renewed perspective on life.
A triumph in every respect – Lara has a distinctive vocal style and tone, beautifully captured in the ten tracks, warm, yet fragile, with lyrics that convey both vulnerability and hope.
Exceptionally high standards of recording and production are becoming more and more common for releases these days, but here they are even more extraordinary, letting Taubman’s complex and layered arrangements shine through, enhancing her deeply personal lyrics without ever overpowering them.
In her words “the album has been like a ship on which I can finally sail home. I see only now that my three albums are primers that guide me out of my own complex trauma to become my true self.”
The playful nature of the album is apparent from the short. For fans of introspective and transformative music, Lara Taubman‘s storytelling ability makes this album a must-listen. Songs like ‘The Reason I Was Born’ and ‘Sing Your Song’ shine with hope, while tracks such as ‘Sugar’ and ‘The Odyssey’ tackle dark themes with humor and resilience.
Though it is only a little over 40 minutes, “The Gospel of Getting Free” is a promising album that highlights Taubman’s potential as an evocative singer-songwriter as well as her ability to connect with the listener emotionally and convey her passion for her family and community.
