Multi-modal pop powerhouse I’MMORTAL is back with a brand new single, ‘Uncanny Valley’ released via her Immortality imprint. The poignant single received support from revered tastemaker NOTION.
I’MMORTAL is a New York and London-based genre-blending music producer, vocalist, visual artist, and creative director. She launched herself into the digital sphere in August 2023 with the release of her debut tech-house single, ‘Versace Spaceship’ and has since released four more singles.
‘Uncanny Valley’ is a sonic feast showcasing how I’MMORTAL’s prowess as a producer and storyteller is growing with each new release. We’ve had the pleasure to chat with her on this track and many more.
Hello! Thanks for sitting down with us to discuss music, inspiration, and more! For starters, when did you get the music bug? Can you recall your first ever musical experience?
Hello! Thanks for having me. I first got the music bug when I started going to raves. My first musical experience was playing in an orchestra in elementary school.
Given the state of mainstream culture that permeates how we consume media, how would you introduce your music to a stranger?
I would introduce my music to a stranger as “shapeshifting electropop”.
Is there a specific philosophy or worldview underlying your music?
I like to let the song show me what it wants to become while working on it.
And if you had to pick one track that shows people who you are as an artist, which one would it be?
Probably ‘Killed U in a Dream’.
Please tell us a bit more about your release ‘Uncanny Valley’. What is the message you’re trying to convey with this release?
It’s a fun song that feels like a robot becoming sentient. I think the message is for us humans to remember that A.I. is made in our image.
Take me through your sound design process. Does the conception come first or do the songs evolve naturally – do you have a clear idea of what it will be before you start to make it?
I always seem to come up with the hook first. I come up with the song title really early on too. However, I’ve learned that I never know what the song will end up as in the end. In fact, I’ve accepted that it takes me a long time to finish songs. I revisit the song for many months or even years to see where it wants to go. Sometimes the genre even changes.
There are many descriptions of the ideal state of mind for being creative. What is it like for you? What supports this ideal state of mind and what are distractions? Are there strategies to enter into this state more easily?
The ideal state of mind for me comes when I let go of imaginary deadlines. Not feeling pressured to finish projects by a specific deadline allows me to be in a state of play. That’s when I can finally get really creative and have a lot of fun. A good strategy for me is taking breaks when I hit a wall or when I get frustrated. Sometimes taking a break and revisiting the track is the best thing I can do.
How do you know when a track is ready? Does it ever become difficult to refine ideas or stop perfecting?
I can work on tracks forever. I have so many tracks that just don’t feel ready to be released. It definitely becomes hard to stop perfecting tracks. I feel a track is ready when the track feels like a complete journey. It’s a bit of an arbitrary feeling.

Do you have certain rituals to get you into the right mindset for creating? What role do certain foods or stimulants like coffee, lighting, scents, exercise, or reading poetry play?
I like to work on creative projects at night. I am super nocturnal. I like to have LED lights and candles. Recently I’ve gotten really into dancing, and it’s done wonders for my creativity in music and visuals.
What other creative outputs do you engage in that we may not suspect?
Dancing! I recently got really into dancing. It’s just so fun. I’ve also recently been dabbling in burlesque.
Guilty pleasure time. What would you say are some of your current most guilty pleasures? All is fair: games, food, books, video games, whatever floats your boat. Let us have it.
I like really spicy food and really sour candy (smiles).
What music have you been listening to recently?
Heidi Montag’s “Superficial” album.
To wrap it up, what do you hope to do with your art in the future? I mean, do you have any crazy goals?
I hope to put on some crazy live performances soon.
