The life and career of Cypress Hill’s Sen Dog are set to take center stage in a forthcoming documentary that explores the personal story behind one of hip-hop’s most recognizable voices.

Titled “Mi Familia: Sen Dog and the American Dream”, the film will trace the journey of Senen “Sen Dog” Reyes, offering an intimate look at his family history, cultural roots and rise to international fame. Rather than focusing exclusively on Cypress Hill’s success, the documentary aims to uncover the experiences that shaped Reyes long before he became a defining figure in West Coast hip-hop.

The project features an impressive lineup of contributors from across the worlds of music and entertainment. Among those appearing in the film are Cypress Hill bandmate B-Real, hip-hop legend DMC, Public Enemy’s Chuck D, Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash, Black Eyed Peas founder Will.i.am, funk pioneer George Clinton, music executive Emilio Estefan and global superstar Pitbull.

According to the filmmakers, the documentary begins with the Reyes family’s departure from Cuba in the aftermath of the Communist Revolution before following their new life in the United States. It explores the realities of growing up in South Central Los Angeles during a turbulent period marked by social tensions, gang activity and economic hardship, while highlighting the resilience that ultimately helped pave the way for Sen Dog’s artistic career.

The story then follows the formation of Cypress Hill and the group’s ascent from the Los Angeles underground scene to global recognition. Since emerging in the early 1990s, the band has become one of the most influential acts in hip-hop, known for its distinctive sound, groundbreaking success and lasting cultural impact.

For Reyes, the film represents a deeply personal project and an opportunity to reconnect with his heritage.

“Mi Familia is a truly unique experience that reconnects me with my Cuban roots and our family’s musical legacy, which stretches back many generations,” he said. “It also brings me closer to so many musical icons who have played a part in breaking barriers and blending genres and cultures, and I feel deeply honored to have them featured throughout my journey in this film.”

The documentary is directed by Christian Jean, who also serves as co-writer and producer. Reyes is involved as both writer and producer alongside Christina Banker through Freedom Village Films, while Sam Okun joins the production team as executive producer.

More than three decades after Cypress Hill first emerged onto the global stage, “Mi Familia: Sen Dog and the American Dream” promises to reveal the man behind the music, offering audiences a closer look at the personal history, struggles and ambitions that helped shape one of hip-hop’s enduring pioneers.
