The border is only the beginning of the nightmare in “Babybacks”, a new survival horror directed by Geno Marx and co-written by Kent Rodricks.

The film follows Zoe and Mateo, a young Mexican couple attempting to escape cartel hitmen by crossing the Sonoran Desert into the United States. The journey leaves them exhausted and exposed, and when Mateo suffers a serious injury, whatever hope they had of reaching safety begins to disappear.

Help arrives in the form of an elderly couple who offer them shelter in their isolated home. For Zoe and Mateo, the house initially looks like the answer to a desperate situation. Then the atmosphere changes.

What appeared to be an act of generosity begins revealing a far more disturbing purpose, turning their search for refuge into another fight for survival. The desert may be behind them, but the danger has followed them across the border, and the place they thought would protect them could become the hardest place to escape.

The first trailer and poster have now been released, offering an early look at the film’s claustrophobic second act and the threat waiting inside the house.

“Babybacks” stars Viridiana Marquez, Ryan Rathbun, Ray Acevedo, Alfred Gonzales, Melissa Chambers, Juliana Philippi, AB Phoenix, Peter Lucas and J Diego Gonçalves.

A release date has yet to be announced.
