Дeva (Deva) is a project by Hungarian composer and singer Dorina Takács. It represents a sonic journey that weaves together electronic music with elements of traditional sounds, taking the audience on a nostalgic trip while evoking memories of times that are often overlooked.
The remarkable compositions of Dorina Takács, developed through this project, are deeply connected to the artist’s childhood. This connection is unsurprising, given the profound impact of her early experiences. Takács began her career in a choir, where she discovered the beauty of traditional folk music and dance.
She later pursued the study of musical culture and religion at Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest. Although she postponed her courses there, the impact of her thorough academic study is reflected in her creations. The music composed by Dorina not only incorporates folkloric influences but also possesses a sense of mystery that evokes feelings experienced in prayer or within the sacred atmosphere of a church.
Recently, Дeva unveiled a captivating new album titled “Avar.” This remarkable work transports listeners on a mesmerizing journey that bridges reality and dreams. As you immerse yourself in its soundscapes, you’ll find yourself wandering through a vivid tapestry of sonic narratives, evoking a sense of childlike wonder that is both pure and instinctual.
“Avar” unfolds like a series of enchanting worlds, each one more intriguing than the last. With its rich layers of sound, the album creates an imaginative landscape that invites exploration without causing disorientation. The artist skillfully weaves an emotional thread throughout each composition, ensuring that listeners remain connected to a deeper thematic essence.
As in any journey through unknown lands, “Avar” broadens its horizons under the influence of emotions such as fear, dread, sadness, and even anger, which keep you engaged throughout this sonic experience. When things start to feel too dark and gloomy, an electro spectrum of music appears like a veil, softening the harshness of suffering with what seems like a magical touch. The ten pieces of “Avar” are filled with magic, but above all, they showcase a great deal of talent and inner sensitivity.
Дeva successfully distinguishes between traditional and contemporary spaces, highlighting elements such as deep living and authentic clothing. Through a unique sound and artistic approach, “Avar” serves as an invitation for introspection, blending fantasy with new meanings and creating new worlds.
I want to discuss a few songs that have profoundly moved me from the very first listen. I’ll start with ‘Folyó‘ (feat. Fatou Gozlán, Zoltán Lantos), which I find to be one of the most haunting compositions I’ve encountered lately. The blend of traditional instruments gives a unique depth to the overall sound, while the vocal delivery resembles a kind of melodious wailing reminiscent of gypsy vigils. This combination sends a deep thrill through my being. I also feel that this song has the least involvement with the electro sound present on the album.
‘11 (Két Szál)‘ follows next in the playlist and serves as a lively revival. The song has a vibrant, tribal dance-inspired vibe that has a way of getting you moving—if not physically, then certainly on a soulful level. It fits seamlessly into the rather heavy atmosphere of this album.
‘Odú‘ is an ode that inspires dreaming and calmness, fostering a state of tranquility and an adventurous longing for an inner journey. The vocal intonations convey a sense of motherly warmth and joy, which resonate with universal themes and echoes. The electronic elements add an astral dimension to this sonic experience.
I feel a strong connection to the piece titled ‘Bánat.’ This is likely because it references the region in Romania and Serbia, where I live, and where Turkish and Oriental influences are still very prominent. Additionally, elements of Germanic culture are also evident in this composition. While it features noticeable Oriental influences, it still exudes elegance and showcases a well-structured sense of taste and creative vision.
Overall, “Avar” emerges as an album that captivates listeners with its enigmatic allure and profound substance. The music weaves a rich tapestry of sounds that engage the imagination, inviting the audience to embark on a journey through time. Its innovative approach and unique artistic expression elevate each track, transforming the act of listening into a remarkable experience—one that feels like a teleportation through different eras, combining the essence of the past with contemporary creativity.
