Weezer are adding another chapter to their long-running color-coded legacy with the announcement of their 20th studio album, a new self-titled release that fans are already calling the “Gold Album.”

Set to arrive on August 21 via Reprise and Warner Records, the record introduces a fresh era for the veteran alternative rock band while revisiting some of the creative chemistry that defined their earliest years. Alongside the announcement, Weezer unveiled the album’s lead single, ‘We Might as Well Be Strangers’, featuring guest vocals from Karly Hartzman, frontwoman of indie rock outfit Wednesday.

Over the years, Weezer have built a unique tradition around their self-titled releases, with fans identifying albums through their distinctive cover colors, including the beloved “Blue Album”, “Green Album”, “Red Album”, “White Album”, “Teal Album” and “Black Album”. The latest release continues that lineage with a gold-themed visual identity that gives the project its unofficial name.

The upcoming album also marks a significant moment for the band internally. Rivers Cuomo and drummer Pat Wilson reportedly worked together on the foundation of new songs for the first time since the creation of Weezer’s landmark 1994 debut. Three of the group’s four members contributed to the songwriting process, bringing a collaborative spirit that echoes the band’s formative years.

Production was handled by Swedish producer Klas Åhlund alongside Kenneth Blum, who encouraged the group to embrace a heavier and more aggressive sound than listeners might expect. The result is said to push Weezer into new territory while maintaining the melodic instincts that have defined their catalog for more than three decades.

Leading the album rollout is ‘We Might as Well Be Strangers’, an introspective track centered on emotional distance, personal change and relationships that have drifted apart over time. Hartzman’s guest appearance adds a fragile, heartfelt dimension to the song, creating a striking vocal interplay with Cuomo.

The ten-track album will also include ‘Say Yes’, ‘Shine Again’, ‘Don’t Make It Weird’, ‘C.E.O.’, ‘Hoops’, ‘Nowhere’, ‘Up in the Clouds’ and ‘The LA Sound’.

The announcement follows news of Weezer’s upcoming “The Gathering Tour”, a 32-date North American run that will feature support from The Shins and Silversun Pickups.

More than thirty years after their breakthrough, Weezer continue to evolve without abandoning the ideas that made them one of alternative rock’s most recognizable bands. With the arrival of the “Gold Album”, the group looks set to add yet another memorable entry to its ever-expanding catalog.
