“I have always thought that every picture we take is a product of every picture we have ever seen”, says London photographer Bill Hart-French, “but sometimes you don’t realize it.”
In March 2022, Bill got together with Portuguese model Catarina Correia to shoot a test. He wanted to try out a new lighting setup. “But I forgot what a fantastic, creative model Catarina was. She completely knocked it out of the park!”
Bill Hart-French is a British photographer and is probably best known for his naked narrative photography. His stories have been published over fifty times throughout the world.
Catarina Correia is a London-based Portuguese model. At the age of eighteen she appeared in Playboy Magazine. Her work tends to be grittier and more challenging now.
“When I came to edit the pictures, I realised that rather than just a test, we had created a publishable story together – and a story with a particular look. A look that I just couldn’t put my finger on. A few days later I realised who had inspired these pictures. Brian Duffy.”
Along with David Bailey and Terence Donovan, Brian Duffy was one of the three iconoclasts who completely transformed fashion photography back in the sixties. In spite of having taken the pictures for several David Bowie album covers in the seventies, Brian Duffy is probably the least well-known of the three photographers. In 1979 he abruptly gave up photography.
“I didn’t realise what an influence Brian Duffy had been to me until I edited these pictures”.
