If you thought Robert Eggers had exhausted the horrors of history with “Nosferatu” and “The Northman,” think again. The auteur of dread is diving headfirst into another classic monster myth with “Werwulf,“ a period horror set in 13th-century England, where fog, superstition, and an unholy predator collide.
Eggers, who co-wrote the screenplay with “The Northman” collaborator Sjón, promises “Werwulf” will be his darkest script yet. And judging by the cast alone, Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the title character, Lily-Rose Depp, Willem Dafoe, Ralph Ineson, and an intriguingly shadowy supporting lineup including Jan Bijvoet and Bodhi Rae Breathnach, the film is already shaping up as a masterclass in eerie period storytelling.
The premise is simple but terrifying: a mysterious creature lurks in the misty countryside, and local folklore is not just bedtime stories anymore. Eggers leans into authenticity, with the dialogue partially in Middle English, adding a layer of disorientation that will make audiences feel as lost as the villagers themselves.
Filming has been a globe-trotting, landscape-hunting odyssey. From the makeshift village at Bourne Wood in Surrey to the wilds of Crychan Forest on the edge of the Brecon Beacons, Eggers and cinematographer Jarin Blaschke have been sculpting nightmare-soaked vistas that feel ripped from a fever dream. Dartmoor’s rugged terrain and Puzzlewood’s labyrinthine woods were enlisted for fleeting but unforgettable moments, creating a living, breathing horror playground.

“Werwulf” is slated for a U.S. theatrical release on December 25, 2026. So mark your calendars, this isn’t just a horror movie, it’s an immersive plunge into a world where myth, fear, and history bleed into one terrifying fog.
