Green Day’s long-anticipated film project has finally stepped into the spotlight. The first official trailer for “Nimrods: A Green Day Comedy” has been released, giving fans a taste of the band’s upcoming big-screen adventure and revealing a film that leans heavily into humor, chaos and punk-rock nostalgia.

The movie first debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2025 under the title “New Years Rev”, but has since been reintroduced as “Nimrods” ahead of its theatrical release in the United States on August 14.

Directed and written by Lee Kirk, the film takes inspiration from Green Day’s formative years on the road before the breakthrough success of “Dookie” transformed the trio into global punk-rock icons. Rather than telling the band’s story directly, the narrative follows a fictional young group called the Analog Dogs, whose members become convinced they have secured a support slot for a Green Day New Year’s Eve concert.

Fueled by excitement and ambition, the band embarks on a cross-country journey from Kansas to California, determined to seize what they believe is the opportunity of a lifetime. Naturally, things unravel in spectacular fashion along the way.

The trailer highlights the film’s lighthearted tone, blending road-trip mishaps, youthful dreams and the rebellious DIY attitude that defined underground punk culture in the 1990s. Packed with absurd situations and misadventures, the film appears less interested in rock-star mythology and more focused on the enthusiasm, mistakes and unpredictability that come with chasing a dream.

Billie Joe Armstrong has previously explained that many of the film’s themes were inspired by Green Day’s own experiences during their early touring days. Before selling millions of records, the band played wherever they could, often performing in unconventional venues and dealing with canceled shows, unexpected setbacks and countless bizarre situations along the way.

Those real-life memories helped shape the spirit of the film, which also incorporates references to some of the more chaotic moments associated with Green Day’s history, including the anarchic energy that surrounded many of their live performances.

In addition to appearances by Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool, the cast includes Mason Thames, Kylr Coffman, Ryan Foust and Mckenna Grace. Familiar faces such as Fred Armisen, Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey also join the ensemble, adding another layer of comedy to the project.

Armstrong has spoken for years about his desire to bring a Green Day-inspired film to life, drawing influence from projects connected to legendary acts such as The Ramones, The Beatles and The Who. Rather than following the traditional music-biopic formula, “Nimrods” embraces comedy and fiction as a way of capturing the spirit of a band that built its career through determination, friendship and a healthy disregard for the rules.

With its mix of punk attitude, road-trip comedy and affectionate nods to Green Day’s early days, “Nimrods: A Green Day Comedy” looks poised to offer fans a fresh and entertaining perspective on the culture that helped shape one of the most influential punk bands of the modern era.
