Deceits feels like a band you experience before you fully understand. There’s a kind of raw clarity in what they do: direct, intense, and very present. Their sound carries both movement and emotion, pulling from different places without losing its core.
In this conversation, Kevin “Pups” Moreno (vocals / instruments) moves between humor and sincerity, talking about energy, growing up around music, and the strange balance between chaos and comfort that shapes everything they create.
For a fan-to-be who may not have yet heard a Deceits track but is reading this as their introduction into your world, how would you describe your sound and where it’s going?
Pure passion. Passionate in its sincerity and authenticity. Every song is not made for another purpose but for self-fulfillment.
You say you’re too romantic for the punks and too fierce for the goths. Who are you too much for right now?
We’re too much for ourselves. I kid. Honestly, we play live with such an intensity that it may catch a lot of people off guard who expect a typical goth performance. We bled and grew up punk and still try to keep that energy and spirit in everything we do.
Growing up surrounded by Spanish-language music, rhythm, and color, how did that cultural environment quietly shape your sense of melody and mood?
The rhythm became multicolored, and the ears opened to different soundscapes. It oozes into whatever music we try to make, whether we know it or not.
Post-punk was never meant to be comfortable. What are you actively trying to make people feel uneasy about?
Uneasy about the illnesses of the world we all share. Providing a soundtrack to the sadness and chaos all around us is the root of the goal.
Your live shows are often described as intense and magnetic. What do you hope someone feels in their body, not just their head, after seeing you live?
We may not be the most proficient musicians, and our music may be sloppy, but to anyone who sees us live. There is no denying that we put our hearts and souls into every passionate performance. If you move your feet to our sounds, then our mission is accomplished.
How do you take care of yourselves, mentally or physically, while being constantly on the move?
Crying and holding each other closely as we watched people scream our name in countries we had always spoken about visiting as teens.
Do you have certain rituals to get you into the right mindset for creating? What role do certain foods or stimulants like coffee, lighting, scents, or exercise play?
All the stimulants are open game to us, although I prefer whisky. We try our best to exercise on tour for at least 30 minutes when we can, but sometimes it doesn’t work out.
If someone hears Deceits for the first time at 2 a.m., alone, what do you hope lingers after the last note fades?
Our music works wonderfully at 2 a.m. as we want to provide the listener a feeling of both sadness and comfort.
Guilty pleasure time. What would you say are some of your current most guilty pleasures? All is fair game: food, books, video games, whatever floats your boat. Let us have it.
My fiancé keeps me current on the world of pop music, so I love singing and stimming on the songs she puts on, much to the annoyance of Francisco.
