Emerging from the humid heart of Houston, The Shrubs return with ‘Fall Behind,’ a single that feels both sun-kissed and introspective. Released under Blossom Records, the track radiates a warmth that’s not merely sonic but emotional, blending surf-rock exuberance with the kind of nostalgia that sneaks up on you like an old photograph.
Miguel, who originally wrote the song many years ago, recalls:
“‘Fall Behind’ is fairly unique. I wrote the song years ago, recorded a solo version of it, etc, then just kept it on the back burner for years. I always liked it, but that first version had more kinks than I cared to iron out at the time, so I just semi-abandoned it. We finally revisited it a few years ago… I also completely rewrote the lyrics to make them more contemporary to what was happening at that moment in time.”
This rebirth mirrors the song’s own spirit, a careful reimagining of something intimate, polished until it feels both new and familiar.

Recorded at their home studio, Flowers on the Wall in Katy, Texas, ‘Fall Behind’ carries the grain and crackle of analog warmth. The Shrubs channel the sun-drenched energy of The Ventures or The Bambi Molesters, yet lace it with synth-pop sparkles and psych-rock undertones. What results is an invitation to dance in the rain, a bright, shimmering track that hides its quiet introspection beneath a breezy exterior.
Sophie’s vocals glide effortlessly between melancholy and euphoria, guiding the listener through a kaleidoscope of memory and movement. Each guitar layer unfurls like a daydream caught between surf and skyline. ‘Fall Behind‘ doesn’t aim to shock or overwhelm; it moves like a pulse, a reminder of carefree days and the soft chaos of growing older.
In many ways, this single captures The Shrubs’ evolution: a band unafraid to blend vintage textures with modern sensibility, finding freedom in experiment, and beauty in imperfection.
