Hideo Kojima’s melancholy, mud-slick universe is about to get a glossy new mutation: “Death Stranding” is officially becoming an anime series for Disney+. The announcement surfaced during Disney’s Asia Pacific original content showcase in Hong Kong, where Kojima himself made a surprise appearance. Shortly after, he echoed the reveal across his social channels, confirming what might be one of the oddest corporate pairings of the year.
The series will be directed by Takayuki Sano, with Kojima stepping in as executive producer, a reassuring sign for anyone worried the show might drift too far from the game’s existential, ghost-haunted soul. Originally released in 2019, the first “Death Stranding” followed courier Sam Porter Bridges (brought to life by Norman Reedus) as he trudged across a fractured, post-apocalyptic America, ferrying supplies and trying to stitch humanity back together one lonely delivery at a time. Think “The Road”, “The Postman”, and a lot of product placement, but somehow transcendent.
This year’s follow-up, “Death Stranding 2: On The Beach”, only expanded the mythos. and the cast list, with George Miller of “Mad Max” chaos joining the universe. Whether Reedus or Miller will lend their voices to the anime is still unknown, and Disney isn’t ready to tip its hand yet.
What we do have is a working title: “Death Stranding Isolations”. And a logline so cryptic it feels like a Strand-type event in itself:
“Set in the world of ‘Death Stranding’, ‘Death Stranding Isolations’ (working title) will tell a completely new story, separate from that of the video games. The upcoming series will follow a young man and woman as they set out on an adventure.”
Not exactly beach-level clarity, but par for the course in Kojima Land.

Meanwhile, fans of the franchise can hardly complain about scarcity, A24 is still developing its own live-action film based on the property. With Disney+ entering the chat, “Death Stranding” suddenly feels less like a singular experience and more like a fully industrialized ecosystem of bleak, beautiful wanderings.
