In a city long defined by its vibrant music culture, Belfast now has a space designed for a different kind of listening. Tucked away on Church Lane, Music Room positions sound not as background noise, but as the main event.

Created by DJ and producer OJ Wilson alongside Janine Kane, the owner of Belfast institution The Spaniard, the venue is built around a simple idea: giving music the attention it deserves. Developed in collaboration with sound designer Toby Hatchett, Music Room draws inspiration from the growing international listening bar movement while remaining firmly rooted in Belfast’s own musical identity.

At its core is a custom-built hi-fi sound system engineered for clarity, depth, and immersion. Vinyl plays a central role, turning each session into a carefully curated listening experience rather than a soundtrack to conversation. The atmosphere feels intentionally restrained, encouraging visitors to slow down, tune in, and engage with the music in a more focused way.

The project takes cues from celebrated listening spaces in cities such as Dublin, Paris, and Ibiza, while also reflecting the founders’ belief that Belfast has long been missing a venue dedicated entirely to the relationship between sound, atmosphere, and discovery. In a city with deep ties to electronic music and underground culture, Music Room fills a gap that has existed for years.

The interior balances intimacy with precision. Every detail, from the acoustic design to the drinks programme, contributes to a cohesive experience. Belfast-based studio Drinksology helped shape the venue’s visual and hospitality concept, while cocktail consultant Gregory Buda developed a menu intended to complement, rather than compete with, the listening experience.

More than just another bar, Music Room operates as a cultural meeting point. Collaborations with local institutions such as record store Sound Advice and streetwear label Never Never reinforce its connection to Belfast’s creative community, creating a space where music, design, and contemporary culture naturally intersect.

In an era dominated by constant distraction, Music Room offers something increasingly rare: the opportunity to sit still, listen carefully, and let the music take control of the room.
