Snoop Dogg‘s life and career are officially heading to cinemas. Universal Pictures has set August 6, 2027 as the release date for “Snoop”, the long-awaited biopic about one of hip-hop’s most recognisable figures.

The film will star “Outer Banks” actor Jonathan Daviss as Calvin Broadus Jr., while Craig Brewer, the director behind “Hustle & Flow”, will direct the project. Universal has described “Snoop” as the “definitive biopic” of the legendary rapper, although the film’s precise storyline remains under wraps.

It is still unclear whether the film will follow Snoop’s entire journey, from his childhood in Long Beach and breakthrough alongside Dr. Dre to his transformation into a global cultural figure, or focus on a particular period of his career. Whatever shape the story takes, the project arrives through a studio with considerable experience in bringing major music stories to the screen, following films such as “Straight Outta Compton” and “8 Mile”.

Snoop first confirmed the biopic during CinemaCon earlier this year, framing the film as an opportunity to finally tell his own story. “After my brothers got to tell their story with ‘Straight Outta Compton,’ now it’s my turn,” the rapper said.

More than three decades after his breakthrough in the early 1990s, Snoop Dogg remains one of the most visible figures in popular culture. His career has moved far beyond music, encompassing television, film, business, sport and a catalogue that has produced dozens of Billboard Hot 100 appearances and multiple chart-topping singles.

He has remained musically active as well, recently reuniting with Kurupt and DJ Battlecat for the single ‘Me N the Boyz’.

With filming expected to begin this year, “Snoop” is already shaping up as one of the most closely watched music biopics currently in development. Jonathan Daviss will step into a role carrying the weight of one of hip-hop’s most distinctive identities, while Craig Brewer takes on the task of translating a life that has unfolded across music, cinema and the wider culture.

“Snoop” arrives in cinemas on August 6, 2027.
