Sometimes, as soon as a few first notes of a track reaches your ears you realize that the artist in question is no newcomer. Whether it be the intricate songwriting elements, the degree of assurance in the vocal delivery and instrumental performance, or the minute details incorporated into the song, or perhaps all of the above. That is exactly the feel you get when you listen to “Children in the Trees” by Pretend Collective, a group of artists brought together by multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Mike Reilly.
“Children in the Trees” is the new single dropped by alt-rock and psychedelic band Pretend Collective. The band is renowned for its highly conceptual lyrics, eclectic arrangements, and masterful performances by both instrumentalists and singers. Reilly has assembled a great group of musicians here, no doubt. They are adept at various styles of song, moving easily from classic rock to alt-rock with a hint of country and psychedelia. Budynek’s guitar work is particularly good, reminiscent of 1960s rock guitar slingers.
Featuring the driving guitars of Aurelien Budynek (Cindy Blackman Santana, Marky Ramone) and vocals by rising star beccs, the enigmatic lyrics tell of a girl who, sensing a mysterious change in the wind, climbs the Midnight Tree toward the ones of whom she wonders: the Children in the Trees.
There’s a fond, familial feel, tied together by the multitude of voices on offer. As different as they are, they come together like fruits plucked from different trees within the same orchard. In a basket of bountiful gifts, they depict a songwriter who is still deeply in love with writing songs. At the heart of the song is a gentle beat, over which Pretend Collective layer shimmering guitars and the most beautiful neo-psychedelic vocal harmonies one could hear this side of a Redd Kross record.
Though the track conveys a decidedly retro feel, reminiscent of country records from the 60’s and 70’s, and the artwork is similarly vintage, the music is as fresh as a spring meadow. Neither artificial sweeteners nor empty calories are present here, just a feeling of having taken in the best nutrition and goodness that music can offer. So, let us introduce the rich musical cornucopia of Pretend Collective, and invite you to join a party where everyone is made welcome.
This track gives a taste of what to expect from their upcoming album, ‘Summer’s End Parade,’ due out September 6th.
