The story of Paul Atreides moves into darker territory in the final trailer for “Dune: Part Three”, the third instalment in Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s science-fiction universe. Set to arrive in cinemas this December, the film draws its story from Herbert’s novel “Dune Messiah”, turning its attention to the consequences of the empire Paul has built.

Played by Timothée Chalamet, Paul now occupies the imperial throne, nearly twenty years after taking control of the Imperium. His rise to power has come at a devastating cost: the galactic jihad carried out in his name has reshaped entire worlds, leaving him to confront the violence set in motion by his own messianic status among the Fremen.

The new chapter brings back several familiar faces from the previous films, including Zendaya, Jason Momoa, Florence Pugh, Rebecca Ferguson, Charlotte Rampling, Anya Taylor-Joy and Javier Bardem. Robert Pattinson, Isaach De Bankolé, Nakoa-Wolf Momoa and Ida Brooke join the cast, expanding the film’s already formidable ensemble.

According to the official synopsis, Paul’s reign is approaching a point of crisis. Haunted by visions of the Imperium’s collapse, he finds himself caught in a conspiracy involving former allies, emerging enemies and the return of a love thought lost. Chani stands at the centre of the unfolding mystery, while betrayal threatens the people closest to the Emperor.

“Dune: Part Three” continues Villeneuve’s exploration of power, belief and the political machinery surrounding Paul Atreides. The film is scheduled to open in UK and Republic of Ireland cinemas on December 18.
