James Gray is going back to the underworld.

A new trailer and poster have arrived for “Paper Tiger”, the writer-director’s latest film and a return to the crime territory that shaped some of his most acclaimed early work, including “Little Odessa”, “The Yards” and “We Own the Night”.

Set in 1980s New York, the film follows two brothers played by Adam Driver and Miles Teller, whose involvement with the Russian mafia gradually pulls their family into a situation far more dangerous than they anticipated.

The story begins with an opportunity that seems difficult to refuse. For the brothers, it becomes increasingly clear that whatever they have stepped into comes with a price. As their connection to the Russian underworld deepens, the pressure begins to reach beyond their own lives, putting family relationships under strain and forcing them into decisions with consequences they cannot easily undo.

Gray has long been interested in families caught under pressure, particularly when loyalty, ambition and survival start pulling in different directions. “Paper Tiger” returns to that terrain through a period in New York history that lends the story its own particular atmosphere: organised crime operating behind closed doors, immigrant communities carrying their own networks and two brothers discovering that proximity to power can become a dangerous form of debt.

Adam Driver and Miles Teller lead a cast built around that increasingly unstable family dynamic, with the film placing its criminal world alongside the more intimate damage taking place inside the brothers’ own circle.

For Gray, the project marks a return to a genre he has repeatedly approached through character rather than spectacle. His crime films tend to find their tension in the decisions people make before the violence arrives, when a seemingly manageable choice starts narrowing the number of ways out.

“Paper Tiger” will be released in UK and ROI cinemas on February 5, 2027.
