Petre Ionuțescu, aka Trompetre, and Doctorul Sinteză (Uțu Pascu and Cristian Văduva) have released “Nouă Zări”, an album that explores the sonic memory of Timișoara and the layers of history, identity and sensibility embedded in its urban architecture. Comprising nine compositions, the record takes its structure from the nine corners of the city’s old fortress, with each track named after a neighbourhood or historic street in Timișoara. Beyond this symbolic mapping, the album becomes an exercise in listening to space, an attempt to capture the character of each area through its own sonic expression, allowing the memory of a place to unfold through vibrations, resonances and contemporary pulses.

“Nouă Zări” was officially launched on October 23, during a live performance at the Theresia Bastion in Timișoara, accompanied by a visual universe shaped at the intersection of raw matter and organic forms, technology and archaic memory.

The concert’s visual component, created by Cristian Văduva, brought together video synthesis techniques and microscopic imagery, establishing a dialogue between electronic textures and the fragility of organic forms. This visual language extended into images the encounter between the two worlds running through the album: the pulse of synthesizers and the ancestral resonance of traditional instruments. Together, sound and image offered a new perspective on Timișoara’s heritage, approaching it as a living material, capable of taking on new forms of expression.

Within the artists’ compositional universe, ambient music with electronic inflections meets the archaic sounds of traditional instruments, shaping a musical language with a distinct identity. The caval (Romanian shepherd’s flute), the tulnic (traditional long wooden horn) and the trumpet, instruments that occupy a recognisable place in Petre Ionuțescu’s artistic expression, introduce an ancestral dimension into the compositions, charged with ritual echoes and a sensibility deeply connected to collective memory. Their timbres retain something of the earth’s breathing, of distant calls carried across communities, and of a form of expression in which sound precedes words, becoming the vessel for states of being that language can hardly define.

Oriental influences expand this sonic spectrum, opening up a perspective on the complex cultural heritage of Banat and Timișoara, a region where different histories, traditions and imaginaries have intersected over the centuries. These sonic nuances shape a cultural dialogue that reaches beyond immediate geography, allowing the compositions to travel through emotional landscapes and distant territories. Within this context, electronic elements bring the entire endeavour into the present, giving the record a creative tension in which ancient sounds discover new possibilities for existence. What emerges is an artistic revival of the archaic spirit, an act of reactivating memory through the means of contemporary technology.

The electronic foundation, marked by cinematic undertones, gives the tracks an atmosphere of suspense and a depth that intensifies the evocative power of sound. The textures unfold gradually, creating spaces of anticipation, reverberations and emotional pathways in which rhythm becomes a subtle impulse for movement. There is a fluid dynamic to these compositions, an invitation to an inward dance suspended between the body’s gravity and the freedom of imagination, like drifting through the pages of a contemporary fairy tale. The listener is drawn into a territory where sound retains its physical substance while simultaneously gaining the ability to conjure images, gestures and fragments of stories.

At certain moments, the fabric of these compositions seems to carry the murmur of streets, the restless energy of the architecture belonging to both the old and the new fortress of Timișoara, the breathing of a city that carries its past within the structure of its present. This sonic enchantment, shaped through a deliberate artistic gesture, creates a bridge between the earthly and the fictional, the urban and the human, the tangible substance of a place and the imaginary universe it can give rise to. The city thus becomes a living presence within the album, an entity whose acoustic traces are reinterpreted and transformed into musical matter.

The compositions seem to flow like water slipping through a valley before finding its way into the soul. Longing and flight move along the same current as sound, like an old, secret song that once brought the marketplace to life.

This emotional current runs throughout the album, giving it an intimate dimension in which melancholy, fascination and the impulse of life coexist naturally. The nine tracks form a complex sonic universe, capable of carrying listeners through successive states of mind and bringing them closer to worlds where familiarity and strangeness meet in an unexpected embrace. Each composition opens up a different perspective on Timișoara’s urban landscape, while their sequence suggests a journey unfolding simultaneously outwards, through the city’s geography, and inwards, across the territories of personal memory.

“Nouă Zări” takes shape as a link between past and present, with pathways extending towards future horizons. The album sets a reinterpreted sonic memory in motion, reclaiming fragments of cultural heritage and weaving them into a living artistic expression. Through the encounter between traditional instruments, Oriental influences and electronic ambient music, Petre Ionuțescu and Doctorul Sinteză propose a listening experience in which the identity of a place gradually reveals itself through layers of sound and emotion.
