Cultartes had the pleasure to interview Maria Louisa Vancea a while ago, but this time her project is rather different considering her photographic signature. We do remember that her dark, melancholic and bizarre self-portraits are the result of Louisa’s obsessions for hands and dreams. She’s now working on an ongoing intimate, powerful series as the title itself suggests: Depersonalization. Derealization.

Depersonalization-derealization disorder occurs when you persistently or repeatedly have the feeling that you’re observing yourself from outside your body or you have a sense that things around you aren’t real, or both. Feelings of depersonalization and derealization can be very disturbing and may feel like you’re living in a dream.

This project has started with my interest in this phenomenon, a condition that is often misdiagnosed and overlooked. The way reality changes is almost a fantasy, some stories seemed to be taken from surrealist paintings so my curiosity made me create my own dissertation on this topic. This series will be continued, is likely to be completed by an interactive video installation because is such a complex project.
