Lustre. Interview with Nachtzeit.

Baldo, Cultartes: Hello, Henrik! For me, Lustre is the transcendent image for the whole black metal concept. I would rather say that the music you compose comes as an extension, into spirit, to classical music, than to black metal. A state of spiritual fulfillment rather than loneliness, takes over my human being when I’m listening to Lustre. Considering we are talking about one-man project, is solitude a place of inspiration for your creations?

Nachtzeit: The main reason Lustre is a one-man project is that I want things my way, to one hundred percent (with Lustre, at least). I suppose solitude is good, and sometimes even necessary, for reflection and sometimes creativity as well, but I’m pretty sure this is not the state from where it springs. I don’t think that what I do comes from within, but rather from how I understand and process that which is happening around me, in relation to other people and to my surroundings.

Have you ever thought about an interpretation of Lustre songs by a symphony orchestra or a special place for a concert, perhaps a sunset at the edge of a forest?

I have thought about the live concert thing, yes. Both, once and twice. But, I can’t see happening anytime soon. If ever.

Would you see your music as a soundtrack for the Apocalypse or rather for the creation of the world?

Creation, definitely. „The First Beauty” is about the creation of the world.

What would you choose between the feeling you experience every time you compose or the possibility of a life beyond death?

What an invitation to philosophizing. Ehm, I suppose we shouldn’t live forever, right? Lustre (and life, in general?) is very much about contrast and balance, to me. Life-death, day-night, joy-sorrow, summer-winter etc.

Can you consider, in a way or another, your music educational?

Educational, hmm. No, not really. Well, there might be a chance people could learn something, emotionally, about themselves and their surroundings while listening to the music of Lustre. At least I hope so.

What other type of art can be related with your music? Maybe some of Bergman movies, or just a sort of Artur Lundkvist poems, or any other names.

Haven’t seen many Bergman movies and I don’t recognize the name Artur Lundkvist. I wouldn’t say that there are any specific movies or poetry that has been a direct influence to Lustre. I watch a lot of movies though. I use to mention „The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford” as my favorite. Tons of emotion, atmosphere and beautiful music in that movie.

What do you think about religion, God and other things around them? Is really that bad to believe in God?

It probably is an absolutely wonderful feeling to believe in a god, or five. I sure wish I could. Anyhow, I must say I’m kind of satisfied with the way things are. If you have ever stood on the top of a mountain, then you probably know what I mean. A glimpse of glory, I use to call those moments.

Do you believe that truth and love can be achieved and experienced through art, namely music?

Definitely. Ain’t that the main reason we listen to music?

Were you ever overwhelmed so much, emotionally speaking, by any particular song of your own, that you don’t ever want to listen to? On the other hand, is there a song where you always come back with pleasure and gratitude?

I must admit that I can get emotional when listening to Lustre, yes. The part starting at 10:42 in „The Light of Eternity” and the one starting at 3:47 in „Green Worlds”, those are melodies that mean a lot to me, personally.

Do you consider Lustre represents the heritage you can leave to your descendants? Or would you like your music perish with you?

Well, I hope my music will still be here after I have moved on.
