Freya in the Garden of Soul is an episode-based surrealist novel that I decided to publish online as I go along with the writing process. It focuses on the journey of a character named Freya in the realms of the unconscious where she meets and interacts with different phantasmagorical characters that challenge her sense of self through different riddles and sayings that may be perceived as subtitle advice from inner guides.

Full of metaphors, parables, and leads, Freya aims to lead the reader on a journey of inner discovery that anyone can relate to if immersed in the story with an open mind. She will question herself, what she sees, feels and thinks and the world in the labyrinth she found herself into, provoking everyone that enters with her to do that as well.

Silence. No movement… Not even the sound of her own breath. Petrified like in a catatonic state. Here, but not actually in this plane. Fractured consciousness dissolving in a void.

Slowly, the pumping of her heart makes short noises that reach her ears. Freya feels her breath coming in and going out. Her eyes are wide open; her heart is full of thoughts flickering like colorful lights.

“All the pieces scattered in a chaos that you well know how to navigate.” She hears a voice talking to her.

“In the labyrinth of Cnossos you are the warrior with the golden sword.” The voice continues talking while getting louder.

She looks around in the darkness that is slowly lit by the colors getting out of her head.

“You stand still, closer and closer to the essence. Do you now hear me well?” asks the voice.

“I hear you in a way that I haven’t before,” Freya responds. Music starts playing and her body moves following the rhythm. Her heart beats with such intensity that she no longer feels being anything else besides it, like everything else sort of disappeared for a moment. Faster and faster it pumps the blood into her body. The more she feels it, the brighter the darkness becomes.

“Resurrect your demons so you can meet your angels! The hero’s journey you will now make. Your tasks are that of a Hercules, which only you were given, for you well know how to complete. Find the Cup of Life that will give you the strength you will need.” says the voice again.

“Where is this Cup of Life you tell me about?” asks Freya with curiosity.

“You don’t need to ask me for such indications for you are already closer to it than you think. In the Cup of Life, the serpent has bathed, blessed it with the wisdom of the Gods that humans keep denying. You have once tasted it, long time ago so you are no stranger to it. Once you sip from the Cup of Life you will walk awake between the asleep of your kind. Find it and continue to drink for yours will be key to open all the drawers of the journey.” Freya hears the voice and feels she is on the right path for the first time.

Irina Gache is a visual artist and writer from Bucharest, Romania. Her main preoccupation is photography but she also loves to give life to images through other media like paintings and collages. When she writes she does it in a surrealist way and allures the reader into the text by making it very visual and with riddle-like challenges. "I like my text to move like a motion picture in the reader's mind where he/she can project himself/herself into. When I write I see a whole movie being created".
