Freya in the Garden of Soul is an episode-based surrealist novel that I decided to publish online as I go along with the writing process. It focuses on the journey of a character named Freya in the realms of the unconscious where she meets and interacts with different phantasmagorical characters that challenge her sense of self through different riddles and sayings that may be perceived as subtitle advice from inner guides.

Full of metaphors, parables, and leads, Freya aims to lead the reader on a journey of inner discovery that anyone can relate to if immersed in the story with an open mind. She will question herself, what she sees, feels and thinks and the world in the labyrinth she found herself into, provoking everyone that enters with her to do that as well.

The forest was drowning in a sea of sunlight, making the trees vibrate with flickering lights between their branches. The sound of wind caressing the leaves made a special type of music, the inner dance of nature in its beauty.

Freya dances through the trees listening carefully to the dancing sounds that she hears. She makes her way through the forest dancing barefoot; sometimes beating the rhythm of the nature orchestra with her feet on the ground like it was her drum, sometimes almost levitating in the air not far from it, afloat in a magical realm.

As she feels the whole place trembling inside of her soul, a calling that has no language or sounds like anything else rings her heart like cleansing bells of a temple. No resistance can she show, for it grabs her within, leading her in the middle of the forest.

“You’re here! Fear none for you listen to the callings inside no matter the outside noises. Follow them for the redemption of your soul and the collective will follow!” a voice from inside a tree whispers to her.

Freya approaches the tree and a dance of ghostly hands move across its trunk on the rhythm that never stops. The forest seems more restless, the wind intensifies and the colors get brighter. She touches gently the tree trunk and energy starts running from it in her palms, rushing through her whole body, in an electrifying sensation that turns into a loving warm caress.

“For you, the gift of clairvoyance, of feeling and seeing what is hidden lies inside your essence to awaken and use, for the universal laws have been poisoned and misunderstood.” She hears the voice again as an image of a woman appears on the tree trunk. The woman remains frozen as the ghostly hands touch her.

“Who is she?” Freya asks.

“She’s the forgotten divine feminine, a force so powerful that can shift hate into love, war into peace, pain into art. Setting her free will at first bring storms and chaos into the ill order that we died into; she’ll break the chains of slavery and demolish the walls of the mind prison. Setting her free, you set the heart free.”

“How can I set her free?”

“Inhale her essence; exhale all that you were taught before! Drink her truth, throw up the lies you swallowed! Follow her path and stand tall as you see the walls of the world prison collapse!”

Freya takes a deep breath…

Irina Gache is a visual artist and writer from Bucharest, Romania. Her main preoccupation is photography but she also loves to give life to images through other media like paintings and collages. When she writes she does it in a surrealist way and allures the reader into the text by making it very visual and with riddle-like challenges. "I like my text to move like a motion picture in the reader's mind where he/she can project himself/herself into. When I write I see a whole movie being created".
