Alexandru Nimurad (designer, illustrator) and Vika Tonu (jewelry-designer), two Bucharest-based Romanian artists, teamed-up and created this gorgeous collection of non-conformist traditional blouses that comes together with a special series of heart-shaped jewelry. The two-parts project is called “Untamed Skin” & “Ensemble of Broken Pieces” and it’s one of the most senseful artistic projects I’ve seen in a while.
“The jewellery collection is a collaborative collection which tells the story of a yearning heart, that goes through the process of loss followed by its gradual healing. Each piece represents a step on a journey of rebirth, recovery and rejuvenation, and captures the raw and savage beauty of the heavy feelings that possess our beings when in pain”, the creators describe. They explain also the blouse part in the project: “each outfit interprets a specific blouse that was made for five ritualistic events during one’s life […]: Being ready for marriage, The wedding, Being a mother, Helping giving birth, The funeral“.
What’s special about the jewelry, besides the brutal yet beautiful idea of pain, is the fact that each one of the pieces were crafted in a special kind of way. At first, the artists carved the heart and made a mold after it. Later, they casted it in wax and afterwards in metal; the “Lost Wax Technique”, one of the oldest metal casting procedures (it goes back in the Bronze Age), as the creators recall. “We only used handmade manufacturing techniques and precious and semi-precious gems only”, the craftsmen add.
The connection between jewelry and the unconventional traditional Romanian blouses is a perfect match which shows that practically one cannot exist without the other. The blouse’s delicacy is completed by the primitiveness of the gory wide-open hearts. “An untamed, yet delicate garment, traditionally worn close to the skin of its wearer and handcrafted from natural textiles and pigments and embroidered with primordial symbols and patterns”, as Alex and Vika specify on their Behance accounts.
The official launching event will happen on April the 24th, 2015, 7.00 pm, at Galateca Gallery (Bucharest, Romania).
